Athletic Injuries

Professional and amateur athletes place enormous demands on their bodies – and they frequently suffer from both overuse and traumatic injuries.  Getting back in the game quickly is vitally important, and bodywork can both speed your recovery and help prevent future injury.

At Protherapeutics, I give athletes a level of understanding and treatment that few massage therapists can offer – because I’ve been there, both as a competitive athlete and as a trainer.  My clients include competitive snowboarders, professional martial artists, rugby and soccer teams and recreational sportsmen and women.

This section of our website includes information (gained from my personal experience and professional training) about how bodywork can help all athletes.  And I’ve included additional information for three sports:  snowboarding, soccer and martial arts fighters.

Whatever sport you enjoy – be it snowboarding, tennis, boxing or yoga – I look forward to working with you – to increase your own body’s performance and health.

INJURY TYPES

Overuse injuries occur over time due to stress on the muscles, joints and soft tissues without proper time for healing. They begin as a small, nagging ache or pain, and can grow into a debilitating injury if they aren’t treated early.

Acute or traumatic injuries occur due to a sudden force, or impact, and can be quite dramatic.

Over use can cause lack of energy, loss of mobility, loss of power and general lethargy. When you feel sore, it can also affect you mentally, limiting your potential. Through flushing, managing trigger points, stretching and exercising you are able to counter act all the negative effects. Managing this will allow you to keep your confidence level up so that you can progress in your sport.

When dealing with a muscle strain, bodywork can help manage tension. By keeping tension to a minimum, your muscle will be able to recover much quicker.

INJURY PREVENTION

I teach general maintenance techniques and how to avoid common injuries so athletes can keep their bodies in peak condition. I’ll give you advice for:

  • Stretching techniques: proper form
  • Ice & heat: when and when not to use, how to use
  • Foam rollers: how to use
  • Supplements and natural remedies for quicker healing: arnica, tiger balm, traumeel, glucosamine & chrondrointin
